I must explain before I begin. Growing up, Shepherds Pie was a staple at my house. We had it at least 3 times a month. It was one of my Dad's favorite meals. I, unfortunately, did not share that affinity for something that looked like vomit. I am a very visual person. The thing I am eating has to look good in order for it to taste good. Something that is all mashed together just isn't very appealing to me. It also didn't help that when I refused to eat it, my mom made me sit at the table until I ate it. What did I do? Yup, I sat at the table until mom gave in around 10pm that night and sent me to bed. Bottom line: I'm not a fan of Shepherds Pie.
However, nothing will be sacrificed for our Halloween tradition, and one item on the menu was "Ghostly Shepherd's Pie." Sharon was in charge of this creation, and she did a great job.
Unlike myself, Jeremy doesn't really care what he puts in his mouth. Ever! So he had about 5 helpings of this dish. I was amazed that he could put it away like that, but he is boy. I had a couple ghosts. Cory kept asking if I was going to call it Werewolf Vomit because he heard me refer to Shepherd's pie as vomit. I think it's name suits it though. She made three pans of Ghostly Shepherd's Pie and there were only a few leftovers. It was a hit with the crowd. As we were finishing up dinner, Ammon starts squealing. We look out the window and Dad is in the backyard with a saddled horse. Suddenly all the kids were hovering next to Dad begging to ride. You ever heard the term, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease?" Well, Ammon was squealing so much he was the first to ride, followed by all the kiddos including Zoey, Ben, and Zeeky.
After everyone had a turn riding the horse, we headed downstairs for the movie of the night: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Later that night, I was tossing and turning because I have been pretty sick and I couldn't sleep well. All of a sudden I hear "Mom, you're squishing me." I sit up and see Jeremy was cuddled up right next to me. He told that he "dreamed the man tried to take my head." I helped him back to sleep and he began talking in his sleep. "No. Stay away. Its my head. Hurry ole horse, don't let him get me." Needless to say, I didn't sleep so well, so I think tonight we will show a milder Halloween show.

You'd think the horse thing was planned. It was a matter of timing. It worked out pretty well. Ammon kept squeeling with delight. I was affraid he was going to startled the horse into bucking or something, but old Dollar kept his head. It was a good night.
Yummy I love shepards pie!! we just had it last week and unlike you I like to mix mine altogether because other wise the potatoes don't tast very good. Abby I have to tell you that I look forward to your blog everyday. It relieves a little bit of my stress. Currently my kids are trying to play kick ball in the house.
You always keep me thinking that i need to do fun things like the 13 days of halloween. I guess i need to get a bit more creative. Sounds like you had a blast. I always loved those halloween shows. They were fun to watch and even though they don't seem very scarry now, they did scare me when i was little.
Okay, if you are going to tempt and intrigue us like that, you better add the recipe. And a horse ride.
I love shepherd's pie, that's why I made it so much. (By the way, it was just after this that I quit trying to make Abby eat what she didn't want to. It definitely wasn't worth the effort.) It was a great evening. I love being with the family. It makes my life sparkle. Keep up the good work Ab.
The little ghost are cute. I didn't much care for the stuff either growing up. It was cheap though and a nice break from the baked potatoes and salad we had every other night. I kind of crave it now, but the kiddos and hubby wouldn't like it, so...I never put time into a meal that I only like.
