So, with Matt studying like crazy for the GMAT, we had to cancel our South Dakota trip over Labor Day. Mom still had some of the days off, so we racked our brains and decided to take them out to the desert to one of my favorite childhood places - Castlerock. We loaded up in the explorer and headed out. It was early, so the kids were a little tired.
Matt was absolutely excited to stop at a diner in Delta for a good old fashioned breakfast. The outside looked promising:
However, the inside was a different story. The window was cracked and sealed with tape, the booth cushions had holes and we were in darkest corner. Matt LOVED it though. Real, small town charm I believe were his words.
We ordered our breakfast and they brought out a TON of food. I bet we only ate half of it. The kids were having fun though.
Then we were on our way. The first stop was the trilobite site. The kids were in heaven searching for those little fossils. But honestly, I think the person who had the most fun was Dad.
The kids found some pretty big trilobites:
When it came time to go, it was DAD that we had to drag back to the car.
Then we decided to head up Sinbad Canyon. We made it to the top and it was a straight drop-off. Mom and Dad were freaking out whenever any of the kids got close to the edge.
Back down the canyon, we veered left and went on the kids favorite thing - THE ROLLER COASTER ROAD!!! I have the best memories of this as a kid. Just like Louis and I did when we were kids, Jeremy and Bailee were giggling and screaming for their Dad to drive faster.
Once Mom and I started giggling, we couldn't stop. It was great and brought back great memories. Finally, we made it to Castlerock.
Pulling into that little canyon, millions of memories came flooding back to me. Bouncing balls off the rocks, climbing into caves, Louis kissing castlerock goodbye. We had some lunch and then went to visit Bob Stinson's cabin. By this time, the kids had been in the car so long, they needed to get out and run around, and RUN they did.
Bob Stinson was an old hermit who built a cabin out of the side of the mountain.
By now, I had about enough of nature as I could handle and I insisted that we head for home. So we loaded up the family and headed home. That night we went up to Provo and saw Star Trek in the dollar movies. It was a great day, and the kids are still talking about Castlerock and the Roller Coaster Road.

What a fun day! we stayed home and Labored all day. I don't remember the screens and curtins in that place when I went there with Louis and your parents. Glad you all had a great time.
Sounds like fun! Good old Castlerock and Roller Coaster Road!! I love those places.
The road was twice as fun when you're 60. It was a great day. It was a little overcast and not very hot. I loved every part of it. STar Trek was intense and I liked it a lot. Looking forward to sequels.
The cafe was the best. It reminded me of places that dad would find when I would go trucking with him when I was a kid. The roller coaster road was great. I was able to hold a good 50 mph on it and we zipped up and down! The ride back was great...everybody was asleep. It was a great Labor Day getaway.
