On the Road Again . . .

For Pioneer Day, we loaded up the Explorer and set out on a Northern Utah Adventure.  Out destination:  Promontory Point. 100_1594 If you can believe it, I have never seen the two railroads meet, or the golden spike.  Of course we took my parents, because my Dad is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to Utah History (he did teach if for 20 years after all).  So we headed up the interstate to our destination.  On the way we pass Smith and Edwards, Dad wanted to stop in, but it was closed for Pioneer Day.  We also passed a million billion fields.  Not exactly the scenery I was hoping for (I could see those at home).  Matt and Dad however, were enthralled by the manicured 100_1592land and vintage tractors, I was trying to stay awake.  Finally we reach our destination.  Our first stop is the monument.  We head into the visitor center and watch a movie about the first transcontinental railroad.  It was surprisingly interesting.  To think I have lived here my whole life and I have never known these little tidbits of information.  After the film, we head out to the trains.  I thought for sure that Jeremy would be enthralled by these full-scale steam locomotives.  He wasn't.  We wrestled him into submission so we could take some boy/girl photos.

Toward the end of the trip, Jeremy was done.  He had had enough.  So what does a five year old do when he wants to leave but his parents are ready yet? 100_1613 Yup, he goes off to corner to pout.  You can see a little reddish speck in the center of the picture.  That is Jeremy sulking because it was hot and he wanted to leave.  Side story: I did this exact same thing when my parents took me to Arches when I was young.  The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  So after we made a few souvenir100_1632 purchases, we were on our way.  Our plan was to circle up to Logan and back down to Brigham City before heading home.  Logan was beautiful.  I fully intend to go back there for a weekend, probably in the fall.  We stopped and saw the Temple and drove around downtown until we headed down Sardine Canyon.  Even in the summer it was green and gorgeous, I can just imagine what it will be like in the Fall with all the leaves changing colors.  So we made our way down the canyon and found a steak house in Brigham City that boasts having the finest beef in the country.  Maddox Steak House.  It was yummy, yummy.  The steak was like butter.  The customer service was excellent.  The100_1635y catered to our every need.  Matt, however, over did himself.  He ordered a huge piece of prime rib.  How huge you ask?  This huge.   Matt must have some super human skill because a normal person 100_1636would shrink at the challenge of eating such a massive meal. But not Matt.  He charged that bull head on and conquered it.  So here is the end result of overcoming such a massive feat.   100_1640Bailee and Jeremy also enjoyed their dinner.  The were in awe of the atmosphere.  We were surrounded by stuffed buffalo heads everywhere.  It was quite rustic.  It was 100_1642even aptly named:  the Buffalo Room.   So after our delicious dinner, we loaded up into the car and headed for home.  It was a great mini-vacation.  We saw things we have never seen before, we learned some Utah history, and we ate some good food.  All the elements of a great vacation.  Our next road trip?  Ft. Bridger over Labor Day for the Mountain Man Rendezvous.  Anybody want to join us?

Wow! Quite the day when you sum it up like that. By the way, the Prime Rib was soooo delicious. Yes it was a whole lot, but it was worth it. I enjoyed the scenery very much. There were tons on old Chevy's like mine that i need to go and strip parts off of. :) I'm looking forward to the next road trip!

Our little trip proves that you don't have to go far from home to find something you have never seen and is worth the drive. You forget to tell everyone that the Maddox was a memory from mine and Lynn's younger years. We were glad to see it was still there and just as great as we remembered it. I love it when Matt drives and we can just put in our 2 cents worth. (which you do quite often).

We may just be there to join you for a few of those. Sounds like a lot of fun. What a great field trip for the kids, except Jeremy. Te he. What a cute stinker.
I'll bet Cory would have devoured that whole primerib, too. Next time the two will have to have a show down.
