Goodbye to the Gimp

It has been 17 years in the making, but this week, Matt finally said goodbye to his gimp.  We had a little farewell barbecue the Sunday before the big day.  It was a little chilly but still a beautiful day.

Max even brought his girlfriend, Nanelle.IMG_1621IMG_1622IMG_1623
Then Tuesday rolled around and we were up and out the door at 4 a.m.  We checked in to the hospital.

Then the long wait began.  It was supposed to be a 3 hour surgery, but there was so much damage that it took them 6 hours!! They inserted a bone graft from his hip, so now both his legs are the same length. The doctor also said the bone was pushing on his tendons, but he is now all fixed and will be a little sore, but should be fit as a fiddle once he is all healed!  Because there was so much damage, they wanted him to stay in the hospital overnight.  Matt was completely out of it when he was taken to his hospital room.

He said some pretty funny things, and he even had to apologize to the physical therapist about some things he said to her.  He did great though.

Wednesday morning, Dr. Beals talked to Matt and told him he could be discharged.  Thankfully, Cory took the day off and was able to help me get him all settled in.

There is still a long road ahead which includes 8 weeks of no pressure on the ankle, 8 weeks of physical therapy, and then he will be a brand new man.  It will be pretty great.

Note the freaking sweet shorts I was wearing?! Thanks to Brandon and Angie for those little beauties. Also, I noticed I had the same goofy grin on my face post-op, I chalk that up to the meds. It was really scary for me getting ready for the surgery (the worse part was getting the IV). I was really glad that we could all get together for a BBQ before this surgery. So far it's been good recovering from it. I have to give special thanks to everyone who's helped (Cory, you're the man!) and especially to my sweet wife Abby. If not for you babe, I'd be smelling pretty ripe right about now. :D So here's to looking forward to the rest of my recovery and feeling better for the rest of my life!
